The Only Shower Routine You Need to Feel and Smell Good All Day

Ultimate shower routine

The secret to feeling and smelling good all day is all in your shower routine. It’s not just about showering every day but also the products you use and the time you take to consistently practice this self care ritual. We all want to smell good, look fresh, and feel clean. So investing in an effective shower routine is worth it to transform your body and mind!

Carry on reading to see the only shower routine you need to feel and smell good all day.

The Ultimate Shower Routine

1. Dry Brush

Dry brushing is a type of body massage that uses a dry, stiff-bristle brush to exfoliate the skin before showering. There are various benefits to dry brushing, from removing dead skin and unclogging your pores to boosting blood circulation. And of course, it makes your skin super soft!

If you’re new to dry brushing, here’s a quick tutorial on how to do it:

Keep in mind, this is an optional pre-shower step in this routine. Dry brushing isn’t for everyone, especially if you have really sensitive skin, eczema, or psoriasis. Because the bristles of the brush are stiff, it may be harsh on the skin. If that’s the case for you, then feel free to skip this step!

2. Cleanse With Bar Soap

The first step in cleansing your body is to use bar soap. Now, simply using your bar soap and your hands to shower won’t be enough to really cleanse your skin. So you’re gonna need something to lightly exfoliate your body.

Tip: If you’re washing your hair, make sure you do it before cleansing your body to prevent shampoo, conditioner, and oil from irritating and clogging pores in your skin.

Some options for lightly exfoliating are wash cloths or loofahs. But I think the best thing to use that I would recommend to anybody is an African net sponge, also known as Sapo/Sapor. African net sponges don’t hold bacteria like wash cloths and loofahs do, as they dry really quickly. Plus, they have way better exfoliating properties that will make your skin feel soft. Since they’re quite long, you can easily wash your back with it too!

Tip: If you’re thinking of buying an African net sponge, make sure it has knots in it, as this is what makes it durable.

Lather the soap on your sponge and use it all over your body to cleanse your skin and remove dirt, then rinse it all off.

3. Body Scrub

Exfoliating your skin with a body scrub really helps with removing dead skin cells and smoothing your skin texture. As it’s quite harsh, it’s not necessary to use it every day, so stick to using it about 2-3 times a week.

While wearing exfoliating gloves, take a handful of your chosen body scrub and rub it in small circles all over your body. You don’t need to apply a lot of pressure, as the gloves and body scrub will do the exfoliating. Once you’ve finished, rinse it all off.

If you have sensitive skin, be careful with how much pressure you apply when rubbing body scrub on your skin, as it may cause irritation. If you know body scrubs will be too harsh on your skin, it’s okay to skip this step in your routine.

4. Shave

Shaving is also an optional step in this routine. But if you plan to shave, the right time to do so is after using your body scrub. This is because your skin and hair will be softened after exfoliating. So, your shave will be much smoother, and you’ll reduce the risk of razor bumps.

5. Cleanse and Hydrate With Body wash

After all that scrubbing and exfoliating (and possibly shaving), it’s important to nourish your skin afterwards. Using a hydrating body wash will not only deep clean your skin but also moisturize it. You can use an African net sponge in this step as well. Lather up your body wash on the sponge and lightly use it all over your body to make sure the fragrant smell sticks.

After using body wash, you’ll be left feeling refreshed!

6. Getting Out of the Shower

The key to keeping your skin moisturized once you get out of the shower is to not completely dry yourself straight away. First, pat dry behind your ears, your armpits, your private areas, and between your toes, as these areas easily sweat and smell.

Then, pat dry the rest of your body, but don’t completely dry yourself off. This will allow you to gain the benefits of moisturizing, which is in the next step.

7. Moisturize

Use a lotion or body butter to moisturize your skin. Pat drying your skin but leaving it slightly damp, then moisturizing, will help your lotion or body butter absorb into your skin better.

Although lotion is great, I find that when my body is damp, and I put it on, the liquid consistency leaves streaks. So, I prefer using body butters as it seeps into the skin and absorbs much better than lotion.

But whether you decide to use lotion or body butter, make sure you don’t skip this step in your shower routine, as it helps to hydrate and protect your skin as well as improve skin elasticity.

9. Use Deodorant

After moisturizing your body with lotion/body balm and body oil, use deodorant on your armpits to prevent bacteria and sweat buildup and smell good! If you sweat a lot (or go to the gym often), it’s important that your deodorant is an anti-perspirant.

Duradry Deodorant & Antiperspirant

While deodorant covers up odor and smell and doesn’t prevent you from sweating, anti-perspirant contains aluminum that helps control your sweating, helping you stay fresh and dry. So, if you can find a deodorant that acts as an anti-perspirant too, then that’s perfect!

10. Spray Body Mist and Perfume

The last step in this shower routine is all about leaving a long-lasting, lovely scent! Having a body mist and signature perfume will not only make you smell good but feel good too! Spray your body mist all over your skin. Then spray your perfume on your pulse points (i.e., behind the ear, collarbone, wrists, inner elbow, and behind the knees) to make the smell last longer.
