Because London is such a big, dense city, it’s easier for a first-time visitor to stay in or close to central London. Here are the top areas that are in or close to central London that I would recommend for first-timers as a Londoner:
South Bank – South Bank is the best area to see the popular London landmarks and attractions. It’s located right by the River Thames, so it’s within walking distance of these landmarks too!
West End – The West End is London’s entertainment hub with tons of theatres and amazing restaurants. It’s also the best place to experience London’s nightlife.
Paddington – This is the perfect neighbourhood to stay in if you’re on a budget but don’t want to be too far from central London.

South Bank is the perfect choice if you’re wondering where to stay in London for sightseeing! From the London Eye to Big Ben, the South Bank is a great central location to visit these attractions, especially early in the morning to avoid crowds in photos.

If you’re visiting London during Christmas, I highly recommend staying in the West End! You’ll see the area completely transform with extravagant Christmas lights and displays on the streets and store windows, as well as various Christmas markets!
The Paddington area sits between 2 London Royal Parks: Hyde Park and Regent’s Park/Primrose Hill. It’s home to various garden squares, the Paddington Bear statue, many restaurants and London Paddington Station.
Not only is it a perfect location for first-time London visitors on a budget, but also for those who want to stay close to central London without being overwhelmed by the busyness of the city.
One of the best qualities of the Paddington area is convenience. If you’re arriving in London from Heathrow Airport, the Elizabeth Line will take you directly to Paddington Station within 6 to 15 minutes!
