9 Simple Bathroom Over Toilet Storage Ideas

This blog post is all about simple bathroom over toilet storage ideas!

One way to maximize space in your bathroom is to utilize the space above your toilet! Not only will it help your bathroom look less cluttered but it is also the perfect space to add some humidity-loving greenery!

If you are looking for inspiration on how to maximize bathroom over toilet storage, then you have come to the right place! Here are 9 simple bathroom over toilet storage ideas to inspire you!

1. Install floating shelves

Floating shelves are great for organizing bathroom over toilet storage! If your bathroom does not have a platform or sill behind it where you can keep your bathroom essentials, then adding floating shelves will help you maximize tons of empty wall space!

The most common option is to add floating wood shelves. This is a great option to give your bathroom a sleek and stylish look!

I love how the photo above utilizes floating wood shelves. It just looks good while also being useful for holding bathroom essentials. The addition of the house plants looks cute too!

Alternatively, you can also opt for storage baskets. The example above shows storage baskets attached to the wall being used to hold toilet paper and towels!

2. Use rattan baskets

Storing your bathroom essentials in open shelving can cause some problems. They can get knocked over, spilled or in some cases, they might even fall inside the toilet bowl! I am quite a clumsy person, so this has happened a few times to me! And I would be shocked if no one has ever accidentally knocked over toilet paper into the toilet bowl before!

So, to keep your bathroom over toilet storage neat, tidy and free from falling, use rattan baskets to hold and separate different items. This idea sounds so obvious yet I admittedly overlooked it for a long time! It gives you peace of mind that your essentials won’t fall over and it is a stylish addition to the bathroom!

Here are a few ideas for items you can store in your rattan basket(s):

  • Toilet paper
  • Period products (tampons/sanitary pads)
  • Hand towels
  • Pre-poo toilet sprays like ViPoo (yes, seriously)

I love how the above photo utilizes rattan baskets for bathroom over toilet storage! It uses 4 rattan baskets places on both ends of 2 shelves with a plant and jars in between. It strikes the perfect balance between making it look sleek while being useful.

3. Use an over toilet storage unit

If you are living in a rented apartment/house or if you have a small bathroom then a over toilet storage unit would be the perfect option for bathroom over toilet storage!

With living in a rented apartment/house, you might be prohibited from adding screws to walls. Meanwhile, if you have a small bathroom, utilizing vertical space is key to maximizing storage. So this is where a over toilet storage unit comes in handy!

There are 2 main options for over toilet storage units. You can go for an over toilet ladder shelving unit or a 3 tier storage rack. Whatever you decide to choose, you will find it easy to assemble (hopefully), install and use!

Personally, I love the look of ladder shelving units like the one above. It provides enough space to store rattan baskets to further organize bathroom essentials. Plus, it makes over the toilet storage look aesthetically pleasing rather than bulky.

Another thing I love about over toilet storage units is that they provide high shelving which is perfect for placing candles! Scented candles are a lovely addition to the bathroom because they will make the whole bathroom smell amazing! So placing a candle or two on your over toilet storage unit will ensure that the bathroom will continue to smell lovely without the risk of getting knocked over.

4. Use space on top of the toilet tank

Some of the most obvious spots can easily be overlooked when thinking about maximising bathroom space. One example that comes to mind is the top of the toilet tank. This space is very convenient for toilet storage, not just for toilet paper but for other items too!

You can place a rattan basket on top of the toilet tank to store your toilet papers as well as sanitary products, hand towels, or even a plant! I really like this idea, simply for the fact that I have knocked over toilet paper into the toilet bowl before and having a rattan basket would have prevented it!

5. Opt for open wall cabinets

Installing an open wall cabinet adds a little personality, style and dimension to your bathroom. If you own your apartment or house, then there’s no worries about drilling the walls to fit it in!

I personally love open wall cabinets because they are so easy to see what is on the shelves. As someone who forgets a lot of things, this makes looking for items an easy task because what is on the open wall cabinet will be staring at you all the time.

You do not have to go for a basic open wall cabinet, like I said, they add a bit of personality, style and dimension to your bathroom depending on the kind of look you are going for. I really like the wood and metal open wall cabinet shelf shown above! It gives the bathroom a sleek look and holds enough space for bathroom essentials!

6. Install shelves on the sides

Source

Sure, this is a blog post about bathroom over toilet storage but I bet you haven’t thought about also installing over toilet storage that has shelves on each side of the toilet!

Whoever came up with this idea is a genius! This is especially a great idea if you have a small bathroom or if your bathroom is separate from your toilet. In my apartment, my bathroom is upstairs while my toilet is downstairs so having over toilet storage that has shelves on the sides is a game changer.

With storage shelves on both sides of your toilet, you can store so many more items such as your toilet rolls, air freshener, toilet cleaners, bleach, pre-poo toilet sprays, and your toilet brush.

I love the example of the above photo that utilizes over the toilet storage and shelves on both sides of the toilet to store practical items as well as items for decoration. On the over toilet storage, there are a few plants and air fresheners to make it look nice meanwhile the sides are used for storage of items such as toilet cleaners, a toilet brush and toilet paper.

7. Install a toilet paper holder

Technically, this doesn’t count as over toilet storage as toilet paper holders are normally installed next to the toilet but they are great for freeing up space for bathroom over toilet storage. Plus, it saves anyone from possibly straining themselves to grab toilet paper behind them after doing their business. Toilet paper holders overall are just really convenient.

Best of all, they are so easy to install. You can install it into the wall with screws if you want but that is not the only option! There are plenty of toilet paper holders that are self-adhesive, where you can simply stick it to the wall and bam, it is installed!

8. Install a towel rack

Source

In many bathrooms, you’ll find that towels are placed on door hangers or on a heated towel rail. If you are looking for another option to place your towel, you could opt for installing a towel rack above your toilet!

This is especially a great idea if your bath tub and bathroom sink are very close to your toilet. Having a towel rack over the toilet would mean that you can easily grab your towel after using the bath because it is so close by. Also, if your bathroom sink is next to your toilet, this means that your towel rack can be used to place your hand towels, making it easy for anyone to dry their hands after washing them.

9. Add some house plants

Source

I very briefly mentioned plants before but I truly think that house plants are a great addition to bathroom over toilet storage. They are perfect for creating a jungle vibe in the bathroom, especially if you pick plants that thrive in humid conditions! I personally love having plants in my bathroom because it just makes it look nicer!

If you’re unsure what type of house plant to put on your bathroom over toilet storage, here are a few of the best options to consider:

  • Spider plant
  • Ferns (Boston fern, Bird’s nest fern, Maidenhair fern, Sword fern, or Rabbit Foot fern)
  • Pothos
  • Orchids
  • Snake plant
