The Ultimate Dorm Room Cleaning Schedule
This ultimate dorm room cleaning schedule will help you keep your dorm room clutter and mess-free, with daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks. As long as you can keep on top of these, your dorm room will always be clean!
Keep in mind that this cleaning schedule is only for cleaning your dorm room, not other dorm facilities (e.g., bathroom, kitchen, etc).
Every Day Dorm Room Cleaning Schedule:
It’s essential that you do these tasks every day to keep your dorm room clean. It might be difficult to get into at first, but eventually, they’ll become a daily habit that you won’t even think twice about doing!
- Make your bed – Once you get out of bed, you’ll only need a few seconds to make it! It might be a small task, but it makes a huge difference in the way your room presents and it starts your day off right!
- Ventilate your dorm room – When you leave your dorm to go to classes, make sure to open your window before leaving! This will help ventilate your room, bringing some fresh air in and avoiding stuffiness.
- Clear up clutter – If, like me, you have “the chair” where you dump your clothes on, or a desk where you put any and every item on, make it a daily habit to clear the clutter. If there are clothes on your chair, put them back in your closet before you go to sleep. And if you have items on your desk, take 5-10 minutes out of your day to put them back in their designated place. Once you make this a daily habit, you’ll be relieved of the amount of clutter you used to have!
- Wipe down surfaces – Pick up some disinfectant wipes and wipe down surfaces like your desk, table, countertops, dresser, nightstand and baseboards. This will help prevent the build up of dust, keeping your dorm room clean and germ free! Also, if you have allergies, this could help prevent constant sneezing from dust!
- Sweep/vacuum the floor – Your dorm room floor is inevitably going to get messy. Whether from fluff, hair, food, or any other kind of mess. So make sure to sweep up the mess or vacuum the mess. Vacuum cleaners are often a forgotten dorm room essential. But when you have one (especially a cordless one) you won’t regret it! It makes cleaning up your floor a quick and simple task that you’ll have no trouble keeping up with daily!
Weekly Dorm Room Cleaning Schedule:
Ideally, you’d want to do these tasks every week! Depending on your situation, you may need to do these tasks twice a week to maintain a clean room.
- Change bed linen – You spend about half of your life sleeping, so it’s important that the bed you’re sleeping in is comfy and clean! Do this by changing your bed linen weekly. I always do this on Sundays, since it’s a great way to start off the new week!
- Do laundry – Having a laundry bin full of dirty clothes isn’t ideal, especially if you’re going to classes every day! So make sure to do your laundry weekly to avoid running out of clothes to wear!
- Clean your mirrors – Mirrors can get dusty quite often, which can be an inconvenience when you need to use them! This is placed in the weekly cleaning task, but depending on how often you use your mirror, this can count as a daily task. The best way to clean your mirror is to use a glass cleaner spray and a glass cleaning cloth. This combination is perfect for a clean, streak-free mirror!
- Dust furniture – When cleaning your dorm room, furniture, especially the ones that are above head height, also needs to be thought of! Dust easily builds up on furniture, so it’s important to use a duster to remove it and keep your furniture clean.
- Mop the floors – If your dorm room has hard floors, make sure to mop them after sweeping/vacuuming to keep them looking fresh and clean! The best way to do this is to add dish soap and hot water to your mop bucket and use this as your mopping water.
- Take out the trash – No one likes a smelly trash can. So whenever it fills up in the week, take it out as soon as you can to maintain a clean room!
- Reorganize your desk – As a college student, you’ll probably dump a lot of things on your desk that don’t belong there. When I was in college, I was so guilty of having “the chair,” where I’d dump my clothes, and “the desk,” where I’d dump many miscellaneous items. I’d also dump a lot of the items from my desk, not putting them in their designated place. If, like me, you always dump things on your desk, choose a day and time in your week to properly clear out and reorganize everything. With a clear desk, you create an environment where you can study without the mess and stress!
Monthly Dorm Room Cleaning Schedule:
Since you’ll have (hopefully) made the daily and weekly dorm room cleaning tasks a consistent habit, these cleaning tasks for every month won’t be too difficult to do!
- Reorganize your closet – Your closet will inevitably get messy thanks to your busy life as a student. Finding clothes to wear for classes or when going out means that you probably have your clothes mixed up everywhere and not put in the right place. So, every month, reorganize your closet to keep it neat and to see if there are any items you’d like to donate.
- Clean windows and blinds – It’s likely your windows and blinds may have collected dust or any other kind of dirt over the weeks. Cleaning them every month will not only make your dorm look nice aesthetically, but it’ll also enhance how natural light hits your room!
- Clean light fixtures – Dust often builds up on light fixtures, which can negatively impact their aesthetics and lifespan. Dusting and cleaning your light fixtures every month will help keep them looking aesthetically pleasing and functional!
